Summit Institute for Development Supports the Launch of the Open Health Stack Software Foundation to Advance AI-Ready Digital Health

Summit Institute for Development (SID) welcomes the announcement by the Linux Foundation of its intent to launch the Open Health Stack Software Foundation (OHS-SF), a new global initiative that will provide a neutral, community-governed home for open source technologies powering AI-enabled digital health systems.

The Foundation brings together technology companies, global health organizations, research institutions, and implementing partners committed to accelerating interoperable and standards-based digital health solutions. More than 20 organizations have expressed their support for the initiative, including Google, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, PATH, Microsoft, OpenMRS, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and Summit Institute for Development.

As one of the implementing organizations contributing to the Open Health Stack ecosystem, Summit Institute for Development has demonstrated how open-source digital health technologies can strengthen primary healthcare systems in Indonesia. Through the implementation of Open Health Stack tools, SID has successfully enabled OpenSRP 2 to operate within Indonesia's national and regional health systems, achieving interoperability that is now locally adopted and financed by government resources for a population of approximately 2.9 million people.

This implementation demonstrates that open, standards-based digital health solutions can support long-term sustainability while creating opportunities for nationwide scale-up across Indonesia's 514 districts. By integrating AI-enabled capabilities, Open Health Stack also empowers frontline health workers, improves continuity of care, and promotes more equitable access to quality healthcare services.

The Open Health Stack Software Foundation will focus on three key technical pillars: strengthening HL7 FHIR-based interoperability, advancing the Open Health Stack reference toolkit for local deployment, and developing AI Commons, a collaborative initiative co-developed with WHO to support safe, effective, and verifiable AI applications in global health.

Summit Institute for Development believes that the establishment of OHS-SF marks an important milestone in accelerating digital transformation in healthcare through open collaboration, shared standards, and community-driven innovation. SID looks forward to continuing its contribution to the global Open Health Stack community while supporting Indonesia's journey toward a more connected, resilient, and equitable digital health ecosystem.
